ID:	5842 Sandra Akey Thornton, 79, of the Akey Road, Morrisonville, died Monday, January 9, 2023 at Meadowbrook Healthcare in Plattsburgh.

    She was born in Plattsburgh, May 21, 1943, the daughter of Walter H. and Marian (Dwyer) Akey. Sandy grew up in Dannemora and graduated from Saranac High School in 1961.

    She married Owen Patrick "Owney" Thornton, May 25, 1963 at St. Joseph's Church in Dannemora.


    Sandy worked as an operator for Ma Bell, was a local floral designer, and then served as the Town Clerk/Court Clerk for the Town of Plattsburgh. After her service with the town, she was a school aide at Saranac Central School.

    She was den mother for the cub scouts pack 44, active member of the Skating Club of the Adirondacks, active member of the North Country Quilt Guild, and also enjoyed camping and flower gardening.

    Left to cherish the memory of Sandy are, her husband of 59 years, Owen Thornton; son, Patrick (Karen) Thornton; daughter, Julie (Richard "Foggy") Foster; two grandchildren, Shamus Foster (Maura Trombley), and SaraJo (Wayne) Mattison; one great-grandson, Owen Paul Madison; brother, Rick (Diane) Akey; and brother-in-law, Donald Thornton.

    In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her parents-in-law, James and Esther (Prunier) Thornton; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Loretta and Charlie Ashline; and sister-in-law, Joan (LaBombard) Thornton.

    Calling hours will be held Saturday, January 14, 2023 from 2 to 4 pm at the Hamilton Funeral Home, 294 Mannix Road, Peru. A funeral service will follow at 4 pm in the Hamilton Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. William G. Reamer, officiating. A reception will follow at the West Plattsburgh American Legion Post 1619. Burial will be held in the spring in St. Alexander's Cemetery in Morrisonville.

    Donations in her memory may be made to the Elmore SPCA.

    Arrangements are in the care of the Hamilton Funeral Home, 294 Mannix Road, Peru​.
